Choosing the Right Sunglasses

May 17, 2021

You wear sunscreen to protect your skin from the sun, but what protects your eyes? When it comes to sunglasses, there are endless choices. How do you know which pair provides the best eye protection? According to the American Optometric Association, in order to provide adequate eye protection, sunglasses should:

  • Block out 99-100% of both UV-A and UV-B radiation
  • Screen out 75-90% of visible light
  • Be perfectly matched in color and free of distortion and imperfection
  • Have lenses that are gray for proper color recognition

Lack of protection from intense light sources such as tanning beds, staring directly at the sun or welding can cause a condition called photokeratitis. This ‘sunburn of the eye’ is a result of corneal damage. While it is usually temporary, it can cause permanent eye damage and central vision loss. Prevent this painful condition and lower your risk of developing a cataract by taking the proper steps to shield your eyes with appropriate eye wear. Even contacts with UV protection can be purchased.
